Return to Georgia

After serving two years on experimental radar ships, Jimmy Carter was commissioned a lieutenant and transferred to submarine duty. His first submarine assignment was in the Pacific on the USS Pomfret. In 1951, Carter was ordered to Connecticut to supervise final construction of the USS K-1, an anti-submarine vessel. The innovative and experimental nature of this assignment led to his applying for the Navy's new nuclear submarine program and working on the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels.
